Hi! I’m Emile Marlein (°1998), an engineer-architect based in Brussels, Belgium. I’d describe myself as an empathetic and introspective thinker with a head full of curls and a strong dislike for jeans pockets. I’m always curious, eager to learn, and love to reflect on architecture - and, inevitably, life itself.

For me, the creative process begins with a curious, investigative look at the past (imitation, iteration, emulation). When developing a response to a specific design challenge, I believe in the value of an open, collaborative exchange - a kind of mental ping-pong that pushes ideas beyond conventional boundaries and allows for unexpected perspectives. A strong design proposal should always be tested against its intended audience, using feedback to refine and evolve the concept toward the most effective solution.

As architecture facilitates life in all its possible aspects, I believe that the architect should pursue social and ecological sustainability. The first one translates into enabling personal encounters, community and social care; the second revolves around rethinking our engagement with the natural ecosystem and how ‘human progress’ influences it.

Although a shrimp within a sea of challenges, the architect is a key figure in providing a holistic overview in shaping our environment, revealing potential on different scales, and connecting various disciplines and stakeholders. I’d like to be that kind of a shrimp.
